IISc stumbles at second hurdle

16th Aug, 2008, Bangalore: In keeping with the unpredictable nature of the game, IISc followed up their convincing victory against Vikram Cricket Club with a meek surrender against YFA Sports Club in their second league match of the KSCA IV-Division Metro Shield. The batting, which had done well in the earlier match, was the culprit this time, collapsing like the proverbial pack of cards.

Sandeep called correctly at the toss and elected to bat, hoping to continue with the strategy that had worked well in the earlier match. Santonu and Venu opened the innings. In the very first over bowled by Satya, Santonu tried flicking a ball that appeared to be going down the leg side when it hit the shoe of his back leg and went on to hit the stumps. After the freak dismissal, Ganapathy and Venu appeared to be on course for a big partnership with the latter launching into some characteristic fireworks before holing out to fine-leg. What followed could be aptly called a procession. Batsmen came and went. Some perished to poor shot selection, others to trigger-happy umpiring and still others to atrocious running between the wickets. All said and done, the bowling side does deserve credit for keeping it tight. Satya picked up three wickets for the visitors. Chandan and Aftab bagged a couple of wickets each. The IISc innings folded for a mere 120 runs in 35 overs. On the sorry-looking batting card, Harsha’s innings of 35 of 48 balls stood out as the saving grace.

With only pride to play for, the home team bowlers showed some spunk. Ravi Teja sent down a fiery spell of fast bowling in his debut match for IISc, claiming the first three wickets to fall - YFA were 8/3 at one stage. Other bowlers also tried their best but they had too little to defend and in the end the visitors prevailed after having made heavy weather of the meagre target. IISc now face fancied Cavaliers CC on 31st Aug. This defeat should act as the much-needed kick on the back for IISc.
