League ends on a high

28th Sept, 2008, Bangalore: After receiving a thorough trashing from Vivekananda United CC, IISc redeemed themselves with a consolation win against National United CC to end their KSCA IV Division League campaign on a high. At the completion of five matches, IISc have won two and lost two while one match was abandoned due to rain. They thus have five points from as many matches and have less than a slender chance to make it into the next round. But considering the fact that they had won only one match out of the five they played in last year’s edition of the league, this performance is certainly an appreciable improvement.

IISc were first to bat and were immediately on track with a blazing opening stand from Venu and Ganapathy. Venu made 28 of 16 balls while Ganapathy slammed a typically stylish half century making 57 of 47 balls. In the middle order, Vikram (40), Harshan (43) and Sandeep (37) played their roles to perfection. But a late order collapse ensured that the total was restricted to a manageable 247. For the visitors, Raju scalped five wickets.

In reply, NUCC got off to a brisk start and, at one point, were looking threatening with their giant hitter Chandrashekhar smacking some contemptuous boundaries. But an inspirational one-handed catch from Ganapathy nipped his innings in the bud and turned the match decisively in IISc’s favour. The rest of the batsmen failed to put up any sort of a fight against the disciplined bowling effort of the home team. Venu picked up four key wickets while Sandeep and DJ bagged three wickets each. DJ was especially impressive ending with dream figures of 4.1-2-3-3. This match also marked the farewell of two illustrious players for IISc cricket team – Santonu Ghosh and Shimjith M.

Brief Scores:
IISc – 247 all out in 47.2 overs
(Ganapathy 57, Harshan 43, Vikram 40, Sandeep 37, S Raju 5/69)
National United Cricket Club - 164 all out in 35.1 overs
(S Raju 30, Venu 4/42, DJ 3/3, Sandeep 3/53)

Result: IISc won by 83 runs
Man of the Match: Ganapathy S.
