29th August, 2009, IISc Gymkhana Ground, Bangalore: The jinx continued with IISc yet again managing to lose their second league match after the convincing win in the first match. The culprit this time was the butter-fingered fielding which resulted in as many as six catches being dropped and almost fifty extra runs being conceded on mis-fields. Even then a target of 253 looked chasable but for some wreckless strokeplay by many of the home team batsmen. Having said that one cannot take any credit away from New National Cricket Club for their solid batting and contrastingly clean catching. The visiting opener, Parvez Khan stood out with a blistering knock of 64 of only 43 balls - an innings punctuated by eights hits to the boundary and three over it.
Stand-in skipper Vikram won the toss and promptly elected to bowl. New National opener, Naresh got run-out early after a mix-up with his partner while the latter was dropped at mid-on by Piyush. The drop proved quite costly with Parvez coming into his own and striking some lusty blows. Harish came in first change and bowled some tight overs. But with a partnership blossoming, Vikram brought in the ever-dependable Debajit. Parvez welcomed him with a couple of scorching pulls over the square-leg fence. With pace not working for IISc, Lalit came in to bowl his leg-break and immediately induced a catch from Sagar. The sitter was again put down, this time at point by Debajit. But Sounik latched on to the ball and affected a sharp direct hit thus cutting short Parvez's attacking innings. The rest of the visiting batsmen were not as aggressive yet they were effective enough to put together some handy partnerships taking the total up to 252 - aided by the home team fielders of course. Debajit, after his baptism by fire, came back to snare three wickets while Lalit picked up a brace.
The IISc innings started out with both the openers - Ganapathy and Shimjith - producing delectable boundaries early on. Soon Shimjith, fresh from his century against YFA, played on while trying an expansive stroke. Ganapathy though showed his class with imperious drives and tasteful pulls that were easy on the eye. However the party was only short-lived with batsman after batsman perishing to soft dismissals. Sounik played a defiant innings of 46 unbeaten runs. But pitiably, he got little support from his team-mates at the other end. IISc was dismissed for 169 thus falling 84 runs short of the target with fifteen overs to spare. For the visitors, Uman prized out four wickets. IISc are now in the familiar position of having to win atleast two out of their coming three matches to stay in the league.
