Promising start to the new season

25th April, 2010, IISc Gymkhana Ground, Bangalore: Riding on a fluent and classy knock of 67 unbeaten runs from the blade of debutant Salil Kashyap, IISc started off the new season on a promising note. IISc were playing a match after a three-month hiatus owing to the intra-mural competitions in IISc. If anything, there were hardly any signs of rustiness as the entire team came up with a clinical performance to register a thumping eight-wicket victory against Challengers Cricket Club (KSCA IV Division).

Teja and Shafquat - the other debutant for IISc today - started off proceedings with disciplined spells with the latter also scalping his maiden wicket. Challengers seemed to be building a good second wicket partnership when Dibyendu induced a false shot from Rajeev and Arjun took a smart running catch. From there on the visitors lost their way with wickets falling at regular intervals. Dibyendu picked up two more middle-order batsmen while the spin trio of Arindam, Arjun and Lalit shared 5 wickets amongst themselves to restrict Challengers to 125/9 in their stipulated 25 overs. The fielding and especially the catching from IISc was very assured, something that augurs well for the long season ahead.

In reply, IISc lost opener Ganapathy early but a veteran and a rookie came together to put on a match-winning century stand. While Shimjith missed his half century by a whisker, Salil not only reached the milestone but also stayed unbeaten to see IISc through. Much of the runs scored by the duo were in boundaries and there were several strokes of remarkable timing from both the batsmen. Not surprisingly, IISc cantered home with close to five overs to spare.

Brief scores:
Challengers CC - 125/9 in 25 overs
(Rajeev 25, Dibyendu 3/17, Lalit 3/23, Arjun 2/12)
IISc - 128/2 in 20.2 overs
(Salil 67*, Shimjith 46)

Result: IISc won by 8 wickets
Man-of-the-match: Salil Kashyap

    Thank you.
Just today myself and Arindam were discussing how the team is missing a left-hand batsman after you and Mehul left. Hope it doesn't become a major problem!
